Our Story
Blessing House began as an initiative in the Fall of 2001 to establish a respite/emergency center in Lorain County.
During the past two and a half years, we have been researching, investigating and networking in the community to
determine the need and potential support for this type of facility for the children in our county. During this time we have:
-
Performed a needs assessment to determine interest and need for a respite/emergency center in Lorain County.
- Visited five respite programs:
Safe Stay in Inkster, Michigan;
Providence House in Cleveland, Ohio;
Turning Point in Columbus, Ohio;
LaCausa, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Daybreak in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
- Established an Ohio nonprofit corporation and received 501(c)(3) status from the IRS.
- Established a Board of Trustees consisting of community leaders, social service professionals, potential consumers and concerned citizens to guide Blessing House in its strategic planning and policy decisions.
- Networked with agencies, policy makers, and individuals in the community, including staff members
from Representative Sherrod Brown and Ohio Senator Jeff Armbruster's offices, Lorain County Commissioners,
individuals who provide services for children, and individuals who work with those in poverty.
- Obtained development grants from the Alyce and Ann Metka Foundation, and Helen Steiner Rice Foundation.
Additional funding has been generously given by individuals and organizations.
- Stocked a warehouse with donated furniture and other items that will be needed to furnish Blessing House.
As we began the year 2004, we continued our progress to make Blessing House a reality by this summer.
In January, we took several major steps in our development process.
- Submited a licensing proposal to Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
- Signed a lease for and began renovations on a house that will be the site for Blessing House.
- Sent press releases to area news media including newspapers, radio and television stations.
- Continued to submit grant proposals and pursuing continued funding.
In the coming months, we will also maintain our networking with area
agencies and community groups. A plan for staff training and hiring is in
process and needs to be completed. Efforts to inform the community about
Blessing House will continue as various staff and board members accept
speaking engagements.
